IPE Decking

Ipe is a hardwood that is naturally resistant to rot and decay, is over 6 times harder than Western Red Cedar, and has a life expectancy of 20 years or more without preservative treatment. Compare the available decking woods. By any measure (hardness, strength, durability, appearance), Ipe is the superior decking material.

Most decking materials look attractive when first installed but the true measure of a quality decking material is how long it retains its appeal. A wood's density determines its durability. Ipe is twice as dense as other wood species and up to five times harder. An Ipe deck will look good for a long, long time (even without staining or preservatives). All woods change colour over time. The rich warm hues of Ipe will gradually mellow to a soft gray after a time of exposure to the elements.

Species

Ipe

Botanical Name

Handroanthus spp. (formerly placed in the Tabebuia genus)

Grade

Our decking is the best grade available and adheres to the tropical hardwood machined lumber products grading rules. Our grading allows the full range of the wood species' colour and grain patterns to be included.

Colour and Grain Variation

Wood is a natural material. No two pieces are the same as the wood grain and colour vary from piece to piece. Please keep in mind when viewing decking samples or photographs that the full range of grain patterns and colours to be found in your deck may differ from the variations which can be shown in just a few sample pieces. All woods change colour over time. The rich warm hues of Ipe will gradually mellow to a soft gray.

Milling Quality

All our decking is milled to high quality standards. Care is taken to insure the decking you receive is milled as straight and flat as possible.

Installation

Due to the extreme density of this material, special installation procedures are recommended:
Decking must be pre-drilled and countersunk prior to nailing or screwing.
Stainless steel screws are the recommended fastener.
Carbide blades and drill bits are recommended.
Deckwise Ipe clips can be used as a hidden fastener with pre-grooved Ipe decking
